AERAS Global TB Vaccine Foundation

The Aeras Global TB Vaccine Foundation (formerly known as the Sequella Global Tuberculosis Foundation) was founded in 1997 to help develop new concepts and tools to control the global TB epidemic. In 1999 the Foundation received a 5-year US$25 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to fund the TB Vaccine Collaboration. Now the organization focuses solely on developing new vaccines against tuberculosis and ensuring their availability to all who need them. In February 2004, the Gates Foundation awarded Aeras a grant of US$82.9 million for new TB vaccine development.

Alliance for Microbicide Development

The Alliance for Microbicide Development defines itself as a catalyst, communicator, convener, and problem-solver. It is a global coalition of representatives from biopharmaceutical companies, nonprofit research institutions, and health advocacy groups. It is the authoritative source of information on microbicide development, convener of dialogue on key policy issues, educator about the public health potential of microbicides, and advocate for the resources needed to develop them.

INDEPTH Network

The international Network of currently 35 field sites with continuous demographic evaluation of populations and their health at the household level in currently 19 developing countries in Africa, Asia, Central America and Oceania, otherwise known as INDEPTH, seeks to address the pressing need for accurate population-based information to inform and articulate effective health policies and programs aimed at improving the health of the poor and reducing the profound health inequities that exist. INDEPTH has established a health intervention trials platform focusing on malaria, HIV/AIDS, TB and rotavirus.

International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI)

IAVI is a global not-for-profit organization working to speed the search for a vaccine to prevent HIV infection and AIDS. Founded in 1996 and operational in 23 countries, IAVI and its network of partners research and develop vaccine candidates. IAVI also advocates for a vaccine to be a global priority and works to assure that a future vaccine will be accessible to all who need it.

International Partnership for Microbicides (IPM)

The International Partnership for Microbicides (IPM) was established in 2002 to accelerate the discovery, development and accessibility of microbicides to prevent transmission of HIV. The organization's goal is to deliver a safe and effective microbicide for women in developing countries as soon as possible.

Malaria Vaccine Initiative (MVI)

PATH's Malaria Vaccine Initiative is a focused vaccine development program created in 1999 through a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. MVI's mission is to accelerate the development of promising malaria vaccines and ensure their availability and accessibility in the developing world. To accomplish the first part of its mission, MVI is identifying the most promising vaccines and technologies and implementing targeted partnerships with scientists, vaccinologists, and development projects. MVI works to link government, industry, and academia partners with field trial sites in malaria endemic countries as early as feasible in the development process.

PATH is an international, nonprofit, nongovernmental organization that improves the health of people around the world by: advancing technologies, strengthening systems, and encouraging health behavior. Headquartered in Seattle, Washington, since its inception in 1978, PATH operates 19 offices in 13 countries.

The Forum for Collaborative HIV Research

The Forum for Collaborative HIV Research, founded in 1997 is a public/private partnership housed in the Department of Prevention and Community Health at The George Washington University’s School of Public Health and Health Services. The Forum’s mission is to enhance and facilitate HIV research and this is accomplished by bringing together all relevant stakeholders to address emerging issues in HIV/AIDS. Through their work, they identify gaps and impediments, frame issues and help set research strategy. Their goal is to optimize care and treatment of those affected by HIV/AIDS and our scope includes research addressing prevention, treatment strategy, health services utilization and health policy.
